What patterns do you see in this string. Describe how you see in this string. Can you find 3 or more?

Todays test asked 1/2 +1/3 does not equal 2/5. What evidence did you use to convince me?

the unit fractions have a denominator that is doubled and multiplied to 24 and the answer is decreasing (the answer is divided by 2) and as jomarie said... the multiplicand is is a unit fractions that is the same (1/4), multiplied by the 24 and 12 (24/2=12) which is divided by 2 and the answer is doubled too...

1/3 + 1/2 doesnt equal 2/5. if youre adding fractions the denomentator has to be the same. so to get 1/3 and 1/2 to have the same denomenator, you have to get their equivalent fractions. Which is 2/6 and 3/6. When adding fractions, you only add the numerator and keep the denomenator the same. so 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6

aww the blogger closed up and i only copied half of my comment, heres the first part:
1) 1/2 of 24 is 12. that statement is like 2 divided 24 = 12. this works on all of the statements on the number string
2) 1/4 of 12 is 3. this statement is similar to the statement 1/4 of 24 is 6, because if you half 24 to 12, you have to half 6 to 3 too.
3)1/4 of 24 is 6. this statement also means, 6 groups of 4 is 24

i think the number string is doubling, just as what mostly everyone says. also in the number line, the numbers are dividing by 2, like 24 / 2 = 12. 12 / 2 = 6. 6 / 2 = 3.

SORRY if this doesnt makes sense !...

the patterns i noticed from the string are that the numerators are all 1. another pattern is that the denominators are doubling at one point.

In this string i noticed that the numerator is always 1 and most of the time the denominator is divided by half??

When I did pictures it shows that 1/2 + 1/3 has more then 2/5.

1/3 + 1/2 doesn't equal 2/5. You're not supposed to add the denominator. You are supposed to find the denominator's first common factor. In this case, it's 6. Then, cross multiply the numerators.

in the string i noticed that they are all unit fractions. i also noticed at the smaller the denominator the bigger the piece.

i think that the question is dividing by the denominator, or something like that, not sure how to explain it.. but 1/8 - 24 = 3. since 24 divided by 8 = 3 the answer :D
