Lester's 2nd Growing Post

1. What strategies were needed?
2. How did you use these strategies?
3. Or How could you of used these strategies.
4. How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table
5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table.
6. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.

1.The strategies that were needed were a ratio table and division/ multiplacation.

2. I used the ratio table to get 2 2/5 cups to get 12 cups. Then divided to get the 1/2 cup. Then did the same to the money.

3. I could have used the ratio table to find out the answers for 1/2 cups too.

4. To get a 6 cups is like this:

I multiplied 2 2/5 cups to get 12 cups.
Then I divided the 12 cups to get 6 cupes.
Then I did the same to the money.

5 and 6.To get new amounts, the amounts I chose were 1 cup, 8 cups, and 10 cups.
To get 1 cup I multiplied 1/2 cup by 2. And did that with the money too.
Then to get 8 cups, I multiplied 1 cup by 8. Then did that with the money as well.
Then to get 10 cups, I got the 8 cups, then I added 1 cup twice to get 10 cups.
Then did that for the money which was like this
$12 + $1.50 + $1.50= $15

Question 2

Question 3

Question 4

hanah's 2nd growing post

This is what the test looked like.

Question 1

1) What strategies were needed?

- I used a clock
- a ratio table (I didn't use it)

2)How did you use these strategies?
- For the clock, I thought it would be helpful to use it. For example, 2 and 2/5 is also 2 hours and 24 minutes.

3)Or How could you of used these strategies?
- I could have used the ratio table for figuring out the cost for the BSM. For example, to get 12 cups, you multiplt 2 2/5 and $3.60 by 6. It will equal 12 c and $18.00.

4) How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table.
- We know 2 2/5 is $3.60
- Multiply 2 2/5 and 3.60 by 5 to get 12 c and $18.00
- So, we now have 12 cups. Then, we divide 12 c and $18.00 by 2 and we get 6 c and $9.00.
- So, 6 cups is $9.00

5) Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.
- I chose 3 cups, 24 cups and 48 cups
- for 3 cups, I divided 6 c and 9.00 and got 3 c and 4.50, so, 3 cups is $4.50
- for 24 cups, I multipied 12 c and $18.00 by 2 and got 24 c and $36.00, so, 24 c is $36.00
- for 48 cups , I multiplied 24 c and $36.00 by 2 and got 48 and $72.00, so, 48 c is $72.00.

Anne's 2nd Growing Post

QUESTION 1
What were the strategies needed?
the strategy i mainly used was the ratio table method. Within the ratio table, there are multiplication and division strategies as well.

How did you use these strategies?

Or how could you of used these strategies.
i used these strategies for figuring out the cups or price or amount of ingredients. Like say to get from 2 2/5 to 12 cup mix. You have to times by 5. Thats the ratio multiplication strategy.

How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of BSM? use a ratio table.

Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.

we can have 4 cups. the price would be $6 since we divide 12 cups into 3.
we can have 8 c ups. the price is $12 since we times 4 cups by 2.
we can have 16 cups. just add 12 & 4 cups, or times 8 cups by 2. the prive would be 24 dollars

QUESTION 2
You are going to create a voicethread explaining the strategies you used on your test. You need to choose 4 out of the 6 questions.
(1). 2/3 + 1/4 + 2/5 =
(2). 6/5 + 11/10=
(3). 3/5 + 2/7 =
4. 1/6/+1/9 =
(5). 5/6 - 1/4 =
6. 3 3/5 - 1 4/5 =
*You can use the clock method for all those 4 circled numbers.
I recommend the following. Choose your 4 questions. On plain pieces of white paper redo them like you did on your test. Make sure your drawings are large enough. Take a picture of them and save them to your desktop. Upload these images to voicethread and embed your voicethread into your blog.
At voicethread you need to describe what you did to solve the problems. How did you use clocks, money etc to solve the questions. You need a minimum of 2 comments on each picture. Here is a video explaining how to make a voicethead and embed it into your post. You should have both of these questions done by the end of the weekend.

QUESTION 3 & 4

Angelo's Second Growing Post

1. The strategies that i used were adding and dividing. I multipled to get to cup 12 and divided to get to cup 1/2.
2. I used adding to get from 2 2/5 to 12 c. I just kept on adding 2 2/5 until, i got to 12 cups. And i used division to get from 12 to 1/2. I divided12 to 12 and got 1 cup. I then divided it by 2 to get to 1/2 cup.

3. I could have used ratio tables, and if i did used them, i'd use them to find out the costs for each container. I could of divided 12 by by 24 to get to 1/2 cup, instead of dividing two times and making it longer.

4. this is how i would figure out a 6 cup container.

THIS IS QUESTION # 5

Equivalence: 1/2 is also the same is 4/8 and 6/12.

Ratio Table: I divide 8/8 by 2 to get to 13 miles. I then divide by 4 to get to 1/8 and 3 1/4 miles. I divide 12/12 by 2 to get to 13 miles. I then divided by 6 to get to 1/12 and 2 1/6.

Partial Products: I multiplied 1/8 x 3 to get 3/8.I added 3/8 with 4/8 also know as (9 3/4 + 13)
I multiplied 1/12 x 5 to get to 5/12. I added 5/12 with 6/12 also known as ( 10 5/6 + 13)

Freindly Fractions: I just used 1/8 3 times and added it with 4/8
I just used 1/12 5 times and added it with 6/12.

Whole Matters: I used the same size of rectangles to see which one ran more miles

Measurement: I just added 1/8 7 times also know as (3 1/4 7 times).
I just added 1/12 11 times also know as ( 2 1/6 11 times).

Fractions are Opertions: 7/8 of 26 is also (7/8 x 26/1)
11/12 of 26 is also ( 11/12 x 26x1)

7/8 is bigger then the rest ,because the bigger the fraction the smaller the piece. Since it is the biggest fraction is has the smallest pieces. It is only missing one small piece. The other fractions are missing only one piece too, but they're bigger than the 1/8 piece. So Since 7/8 is missing the smallest piece, it means that the most pieces.

1st Explanaton:You put how much pizzas there is over how much people there is. With that improper fraction, simplify it to get the final answer.

2nd Explanation:You divide the pizza slices with how many people there is. You then give everyone one slice for each pizza and put how much slices they got over the whole of one pizza and get the final answer.

1. What strategies were needed?

The strategie that were needed is the ratio table.

2. How did you use these strategies?

You take the information that you got from the question. like 2 2/5 you put it on one side then 3.60 on one side if you wanted to find a certain price you multiply or divid it. if you wanted to find $18.00 you would have to multiply it by 5 then you do the same thing to the other side.

3. Or how could you of used these strategies?

You could use these strategies to fingure out different questions.

4. How could you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snake Mix?

I would of took the answer of the question and divided it by 2.

5.Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.
After I divided 6 by 2 i did it to the other side then i dived 6 by two then got 3, then divided 12 by 3 then got 4 then i divided 4 to 2.
I divided 9.00 by 2 then got 4.50. next i divided 18.00 by 3 then got 6 then i divided 6 by 2 then got 3.

Jomarie's Second Growing Post

Question 1
Use this picture and reflect on your the puppy kibble test.

1) What strategies were needed?
The stratagies that were needed were a ratio table because on one side you can put the price and the other side is the cups.

2) How did you use these strategies?
I didnt really do a ratio table but it is similar.

Like for the 12C, we know that 2 2/5 = $3.60 I just kept adding 2 2/5 to get close to 12. Then whatever answer I got to get to 12 by just adding 2 2/5 repeatedly I did the same thing with the price.

3) Or How could you of used these strategies.
You could use these stratagies with many things like fraction problems.

4) How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table
If I use the ratio table I would do 12C = $18.00 (from the test) then under it, it would be 6C = $........

What I would do is divided it 12C by 2 to get 6C because we all know that 6 is half of 12. Then we do the same thing to the price, $18.00 divided it by 2 which equals $9.00. There is your answer.

5) Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.

^^ this is a picture of our test. ( Betty's Snack Mix)

1. what strategies were needed?
- ratio table
- money method
- clock method

2. How did you use these strategies?
- i didn't really use any of these strategies. what i used was that i muliplied 2 and 5 which equals to 10. next i added 2/5 5 times which gave me 10/5. i then divided 10 and 5 which gave me 2. last, i added up 10 and 2 which gave me the 12 cups.

3. Or How could you of used these strategies.
- how i could've used those strategies was to use a ratio table. i think using a ratio table is easy. all you have to do is make a t-chart, make titles, then do your math. what you also do in a ratio table is that you have to multiply or divide a number to get the answer. like this...

4. How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table

Jann's Second Growing Post

Hey Guys this is my 2nd Growing post

1.To get how much ingredients are needed in 12 cups i had to figure out how to get from 2 2/5 to 12. I Turned the fraction (2 2/5) into a decimal ( 2.40) then i kept adding 2.40 until i got 12. which is 2.40 x 5 = 12. So i multiplied all the ingredients by 5, and also the money which is $3.60

Then, to get the 1/2 cup of BMS (thats what Harbeck said coz hes a lazy teenager) I divided each of the ingredients for 12 cups by 12 to get how much one cup is. BUT, 1 cup is not 1/2. To get 1/2 you half all of the ingredients of 1 cup of "BMS" to get 1/2. So getting 12 cups first actually helped me get 1/2 cups. and my drawings in paint is kinda like a ration table but in list form. Oh! Woops i forgot the money for 1/2 cups. So ill just describe it, since $18 is for 12 cups you do the same thing with the ingredients you divide it by 12 which is $1.50 then by 2 equals $0.75

If you havent noticed yet i just coppied and paste my scribe for this growing post :]

Anyways here goes my Voicethread for the 2nd part of the 2nd growing post.

Enjoy! and please comment

For my 3rd part of my 2nd growing post you are going to see a voicethread about the different strategies about the RACE Investigation we did at class last time

This is the 4th part of my voice thread. I am going to show you a voicethread about the pizza investigation.

For all of the slides all i did was mulitply the number of people and the number of pizza to get how much pieces they should have. Then each kid gets a number of slice similar to the number of pizza. So example if i have 5 pizzas, then i should have 5 slices of pizza.

Thank you i hope you learned alot from my growing post.

Melissa's 2nd Growing Post

1.)What strategies were needed?
-the strategy i used was ratio table.

2)How did you use these strategies
- i used this to show what the cost of the cup and how many cups.
-For example if you divide the cup to 2 2/5 you also have to divided it to get the cost.(get it?)

3.)Or How could you of used these strategies.
-i could use this strategy in some problem solving like this.
4.)How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table

- we know that the 2 2/5 cup container cost $3.60. When you multiply the 2 2/5 cup to 5 your going to get 12 cups so divide 12 cups by 2 and it equals 6 cups. To get the cost you also have to multiply the cost of 2 2/5 cup by 5 and it equals 18. 18 divide by 2 equals 9. So $ 9.00 is the cost of the 6 cups .

5.)Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio.

- i chose 18, 4, 2 cups

-for 18 cups i divided it to 9 and i also did the same thing for the cost.

- for 4 cups i divided 12 cups to 3 to get the 2 cup and i did the samething for the cost.

- for 2 cups i divided 18 to 9 to equal 2 cups and the samething for the cost.

here's my voice thread and sorry if it's messy..(Question 2)

Kadille's 2nd Growing Post

question no.1

1. in this growing post, i used ratio table because if i got the unit fraction and its value, i can do anything easy and i can explain it clearly, but also the strategies that can be used are money, clock, double, number line and more...

2. i used ratio table or sometimes called T-table or T-chart to show how the fraction change into unit fraction and the value other fraction, ratio tables or T-charts are also used to show patterns.

3. i could use these strategies in solving a problem especially this one and it shows how is the problem solved...

4. in 6 cups... i need to multiply a number into 2 2/5 to get 6.and that number
will be mutiplied into the given infor
mation are: 2 2/5 cup container with 1 1/5 cup of spicy shreddies, 4/5 cups of peanuts and 2/5 of pretzels, and the solution will look like this:

5. for 12 cups the ratio table looks like this:

the given infos are given and this will be the ratio table i will use in solving the problem

the first and important thing that i will do to help me to solve the problem in a short period of time, thats why i chose ratio table. i need to find what number will i use to get to 12 cups from 2 2/5 cups. and the solution looks like this: 2 2/5 X n = 12 cups. to find the multiplier (the number that is needed to multiply in multiplicand, and multiplicand is the number to be multiplied to another number which is the multiplier), we need to change the equation to 12 divided by 2 2/5=n but in dividing fractions, all mixed number is needed to be changed to improper fraction and you must get the reciprocal of the equation by inverting the numbers and changing the division symbol to multiplication symbol and the solution looks like: 12 x 5/12=n that makes it easy to solve so the answer and our multiplier will be 5. and the number five will be multiplied to the given number of cups with all ingredients, price, cups of spicy shreddies, cup of peanuts, and cups of pretzels to get the exact value of each ingredient to the exact cups and price.
the solution look like this:

i hope you can see how i used the ratio table and how i used number five as my multiplier, now the answer is now being shown and it serves as my conclusion for finding the price and the cups of the ingredients of 12 cups

*i used multiplication because the one that needs to solve is higher than the given number, reverse in division.

in 1/2 we will do the same process as the other one but 1/2 cup is lower than the given number of cups so the solution will be in reverse.* now i will show you the ratio tale with the given infos for 1/2:

in the solution that i did for 12 cups i did it here in reverse, i will get the divisor, like the multiplier of 12 which is 5, and i will divide it into the given informations
so the solution to get the divisor is 2 2/5 / n = 1/2. i will make the equation to the better one and it looks like this: 2 2/5 / 1/2 = n. now the answer of that equation would be 4 4/5, but in dividing fractions, the mixed numbers must be changed into improper fractions and because it is a divisor we will get its reciprocal by inverting the numbers in the fractions so the improper fraction of 4 4/5 id=s 24/5. now that i got my divisor i will show you how it is being solved:

now you can see how i solve the two fractions in reverse, i hope you will understand what is the real use of ratio table and the reason why i chose ratio table...i love ratio table... i really love it! it is perfect to use ratio table in this problem, i just learned ratio table this year and i love the use of this strategy or method for solving a problem like this.

in 1 cup, the procedure in solving this problem is the same as 1/2 cup...now the easy thing is i had the records of 1/2, i will just multiply it to 2 to get one cup and the results is shown like this:

for question number 2

for question number three:

Multiplying Factions
What is
  • 1/2 x 36
  • 1/4 x 36
  • 1/8 x 36
  • 5/8 x 36
  • 5/6 x 40

We can also use clock to multiply fractions. You just figure out what is the value of the given fraction in clock. And then, multiply it to the given number and if it is an improper fraction, make it mix number. Just like this.

We can also use the money method. Just like we did at the clock, but we use the number, 100 rather than 60. It goes like this.

You can also use the ratio table. It goes like this.

Nadine's Scribe Post

Betty's Snack Mix
2 and 2/5 = $3.60
Ingredients:
- 1 1/5 cups of spicy shreddies
- 4/5 cups of peanuts
- 2/5 cups of pretzels
12 cups of Betty's Snack Mix
- 6 cups of spicy shreddies is 1/2 of the mixture (12 divided by 2 is equals to 6 cups of spicy shreddies)
- 4 cups of peanuts is 1/3 of the mixture (12 divided by 3 is equals to 4 cups of peanuts)
- 2 cups of pretzels is 1/6 of the mixture (12 divided by 2 is equals to 2 cups of pretzels)
How much it cost?
12 cups = 12/1 then I change it by 5 by multiplying it by 5 and it equals 60/5. I multiply 30 by 60 and the answer is 1800 and it's the same as $ 18.00
1/2 cup of Betty's Snack Mix
- 12 is the same is 3/6 = 6/12
- 1/4 cup of spicy shreddies is 3/12 of the mixture
- 1/6 cup of peanuts is 2/12 of the mixture
- 1/12 cup pretzels
How much it cost?
I multiply 5 and 15 and I got 75. 1/2 cup of Betty's Snack Mix cost $0.75

Jann's ScribePost

Hey Guys this is my first scribe post.

So...this scribe is kind of the same thing as the other ones BUT the tests are back and everyone is correcting them, asking people what the right answer is and such. So I am going to talk about what I did and what strategies i used and how the heck did i used them to answer the problem.

SO in the test, the first thing i did was try to solve how much ingredients were used in 12 i repeat, 12.

To get how much ingredients are needed in 12 cups i had to figure out how to get from 2 2/5 to 12.

Do i still have to do a growing post? coz this is the same thing i just coppied the questions for the growing post coz thats what Mr Jerema said.
Thanks,

MATH FRACTION TEST

NOVEMBER 21 , 2007

What I Had To Do;

I had to find out how much ingredients would go into a 12 cup and a 1/2 cup container of Betty's Snack Mix with the information I got on the test. Then I had to draw a label for both of the containers including the ingredients, the portions of the ingredients and the price.

What I Did;

First I used the original mixture to find the ratio of the ingredients so I could use that ratio for the other mixes.

Original Mixture.

(2 2/5 = 12/5 cup // 1 1/5 cup = 6/5 spicy shreddies)

6/5 spicy shreddies = 1/2 mixture

4/5 peanuts = 1/3 mixture

2/5 pretzels = 1/6 mixture

12 Cup Mix.

I found out from the original mix that;

6/5 cups of spicy shreddies is 1/2 of each mixture,

4/5 cups of peanuts is 1/3 of each mixture,

2/5 cups of pretzels is 1/6 of each mixture.

So now knowing that I figured out;

1/2 of 12 Cups will be 6 cups of spicy shreddies

1/3 of 12 Cups will be 4 cups of peanuts

1/6 of 12 Cups will be 2 cups of pretzels

1/2 Cup Mix.

I found this one a little bit harder, but again I found out from the original mixture that;

(1/2 = 3/6 = 6/12)

1/2 of the mixture will be spicy shreddies. = 3/12 (because its 1/2 of 6/12) = 1/4 cup (reduced)

1/3 of the mixture will be peanuts. = 2/12 (because its 1/3 of 6/12) = 1/6 cup (reduced)

1/6 of the mixture will be pretzels. = 1/12 (cant be reduced to anything)

Cost.

2 2/5 = 12/5 = $3.60. How much is 1/5? 360 divided by 12 = 30

So I now know that the cost of 1/5 of a cup of the mixture is 3o cents.

12 Cups = 12/1 so I changed it to fifths by multiplying it by 5 = 60/5. Then I multiplied 60 by 30 to get 1800. So I then found out that 12 cups costs $18.00.

1/2 Cup = 5/10 because 1/2 couldn't be changed to fifths easily so I just changed it to ten. Since I changed it to tenths I cut the cost of 1/5 of a cup (30 cents) in half because 1/10 is half of 1/5. I figured out that the cost of 1/10 of a cup is 15 cents. Then I multiplied 5 by 15 and it equaled 75. So I then knew that for 1/2 cup it costs 75 cents.

In the end my labels looked like this.

12 Cup Betty's Snack Mix
6 Cups of Spicy Shreddies
4 Cups of Peanuts
2 Cups of Pretzels
Cost : $18.00
1/2 Cup Betty's Snack Mix
1/4 cup of Spicy Shreddies
1/3 cup of Peanuts
1/12 cup of Pretzles
Cost : 75 cents

Allison's Scribe Post

1) How many gallons of gas and what fraction of a full tank of gas did Maria use on the turnpike driving from her house to Lance's house?

- First we subtracted 352 and 242, the answer is 110. 110 is how many miles are from Maria's to Lance's house.
- The 352= Turnpike in Philadelphia at mile marker
- The 242= Turnpike near Lance's house on the mile marker.
- We then divided 110 and 33, the answer is 3.3
- The 33= Miles per gallon.
- 3.3/15 divided 3.3/3.3, the answer is 4.5454 so, the answer rounded is approximately 1/5.
- The final answer is approximately 1/5.

2) What fraction of a full tank of gas did she use on the turnpike driving to the combined distance from her house to Lance's house to Alicia's house?

- First we subtracted 352 and 55, the answer is 297.
- The 352= The trnpike in Philadelphia at mile marker.
- The 55= The turnpike near Alicia's house on the mile marker.
- We then divided 297 and 33, the answer is 9.
- 9/15, we divided both by 3, the answer is 3/5.
- The 15= The gallon gas tank.
- The final answer is 3/5.

3)How much time will she spend driving on the turnpike when she drives back home to Philadelphia?

- 1 hour and 40 minutes= 110 miles.
- First we doubled the 1 hour and 40 minutes, the answer is 2.80.
- The 2.80= 3.20
- Then we added 180 minutes and 20 minutes, the answer is 200 minutes.

- The 180 minutes= 3 hours
- We added 200 minutes and 70 minutes, the answer is 270 minutes.
- The 70 minutes= 1 hour and 10 minutes.
- We divided 270 minutes and 60 minutes, the answer is 4.5.

- The final answer is 4 hours and 50 minutes

1) How many gallons of gas and what fraction of a full tank of gas did Maria use on the turnpike driving from her house to Lance's house?

First we subtracted 352 by 242 and it was 110.
the 352 is the turnpike in Philadelphia at mile marker.
and the 242 is the mile marker near Lance's house.
then we divided 110 by 33 and it equals 3.33333 gallon.
the 33 is the miles per gallon.
so the fraction is 3.3/15.
the 15 was the gallon gas tank.
and we want to simplify it so here's what we did:
3.3/15 divided by 3.3/3.3= it's 4.5454 so it's approximately 1/5

2) What fraction of a full tank of gas did she use on the turnpike driving to the combined distance from her house to Lance's house to Alicia's house?

352 - 55 = 297 miles
352- turnpike in Philadelphia at mile marker
55 - lance's house to alicia's house at mile marker
297 miles divided by 33= 9 gallons
9/15 is the fraction
15- is the gallon gas tank
we simplify it again:
9 divided by 3=3
15 divided by 3=5
so it's 3/5.

3)How much time will she spend driving on the turnpike when she drives back home to Philadelphia?

1 hour and 40 minutes
1.40 + 1.40 = 2.80

2.80= 3.20

3 hours is 180 minutes + 20 minutes=200 minutes

200 minutes + 70 minutes = 270 minutes

70 minutes= 1 hour and 10 minutes

270 minutes divided by 60=4.5

4.50 minutes
