1/2 + 1/6 or 1/4 + 7/12 ?

1/2= 30 minutes (60 ÷ 2 = 30)
1/6= 10 minutes (60 ÷ 6 = 10)
30 + 10= 40 minutes

1/4= 15 minutes (60 ÷ 4 = 15)
7/12= 35 minutes (60 ÷ 12 = 5 x 7 = 35)

One way to get a quarter of 16, 1/4 x 16. Another way to get 3/4 of 16, cut i6 in half which is 8, then cut 8 in half which is 4. A quarter of 16 is 4. So, 8+4 is 12. 12 is 3/4 of 16.

1/4 + 7/12!!!!

What I did: 1/2+1/6

(60÷2=30.........1/2 of 60=30min.)

(60÷6=10..........1/6 of 60=10min.)

(30+10=40)

What I did: 1/4+7/12

(60÷4=15..........1/4 of 60=15min.)

(60÷12=5.....7x5=35.....7/12 of 60=35min.)

(35+15=50)<---- LARGER!!

7. When we did the bikerace project I used division, for the twelfth, sixth and a third I remember dividing the number by 60 and getting my answer.

8. To get 1/4 of 16 you would have to divide 16 by 4 to get 4, or you could cut the fraction in half (8) then cut those in half to get four pieces of 4. // To get 3/4 of 16 you would divide 16 by 4 to get 4. Then times that by 3 to get 12. You could also cut 16 in half (8) then cut one half in half(4) and leave one as 8 making it equal 12.

9. 1/2 + 1/3 does not equal 2/5.
How Did I Get That....
At first I thought 1/2 + 1/3 did equal 2/5 because I didn't no how to add fractions so i thought you added it like that. But now i no you would have to change the denominator to the number that both 3 and 2 go into equally which would be 6 . I no now that whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other. So if i times 2 x 3 to get it to equal 6 then i have to times the numerator 1 x 2 also to get the numerator to equal 2. Then if i had to times 2 x 3 to get it to 6 then i have to times the numerator by 3 also to get it to equal 3. So then in the end you get
2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6
so now I seethe answer is not 2/5 it is 5/6!!

Which set of fractions is larger 1/2 + 1/6 or 1/4 + 7/12.
1/2+1/6=35/60 & 1/4+7/12=50/60
so 1/4 +7/12 is larger than 1/2+1/6.





2) What we did for this is that every time they said like one sixth of the way , we just took the number 60 and divided it by six. We did not see any patterns.

3) I think this game is a good game because it makes you understand what fractions are and if you go to another level you will end up being really great at it.

4) One way of finding 3/4 of a number is by subtracting.
Example:16-3/4= 15.25, 22-3/4=21.25, 110-3/4=109.25

To get 1/2 of 60 i used a clock and cut it in half to get 30 minutes.
To get 1/6 of 60 i used a clock and cut it in 6 equal pieces to get 10 minutes.
That equals 40 min or 40/60 or 4/6
To get 1/4 of 60 i used a clock and cut it into 4 equal pieces to get 15 minutes.
To get 7/12 of 60 i used a clock and cut it into 6 equal pieces then i cut it in half again to make 12 equal pieces. Then once you know what 1/12 of 60 is you multiply it by 7 to get 7/12 of 60.

7. I got the kilometer markers for 12, 6, and 3 by using using clocks since it's a 60 km race, i cut the clock into 12, 6 and 3. So 1/12 of 60 is 5, 1/6 of 60 is 10, and 1/3 of 60 is 20.

8. To get 1/4 and 3/4 of 16 is to go 16 / 4 then you multiply it by 3.
Another way to get 1/4 and 3/4 of 16 is to find what 1/4 of 16 is and multiply it by 3.

1/4 = 0.25 7/12 = 0.5833 0.25 + 0.5833 = 0.833
now just compare the decimals 0.66 or 0.833
0.833 is larger
1/4 + 7/12 > 1/2 + 1/6.

We labeled parts on the bikerace. We divided the numbers to know where to label them.

We also made a bikerace into a square and went around, to meet the beggining with the end.

The patterns for twelfth, sixth and a third they always went higher and doubled. Since 1/12 times 2=1/6 times 2= 1/3.

I played this game for like 10 min, its kinda fun, then it just gets boring. It taught me some stuff about fractions and it was fun.

To get 3/4 of 16 is to go 16 divided 4 then you multiply it by 3. So 16 divided by 4= 4 then you times it by 3 which will equal 12.

I choose Karen and Hannah's bikerace because Mariya and I also did the clock way because of the 60 km and the 60 mins.

5) Well my bikerace, Mariya and I did the clock way because there were 60 km and there is 60 mins in a clock. For each km its 1 so what we did were counting each square as 1 km.

6) Dolphin game. This game is about a dolphin race. You have to choose the biggest fraction piece to make the dolphin reach the finishing line first. I like this game because it helps you see which fraction is bigger in a fun way.

7) Tell us all about how you calculated the Km positions at a twelfth, sixth and a third. What we did was 60 divided by 12 equals 5, 60 divided by 6 equals 10 and 60 divided by 3 equals 20. Did you see any patterns? I see that they are all divisible by 5 and I see 5 times 2 equals 10 then 10 times 2 equals 20.

8) What are 2 different ways to find a quarter and 3/4 of a number. Use one of the following 16, 22, or 110. Using division and times. For 16 - What I would do is, 16 divided by 1/2 is 8 (thats 2/4 already) then plus 4 because 4 is 1/4 of 16 and that would equal 12. The other way is, 4 is 1/4 of 16 so just times 4 by 3 which equals 12.

9) 1/2 + 1/3 doesnt equal 2/5. Because if you us the clock way 1/2 (30 mins) + 1/3 (20 mins) = 50 mins, and 2/5 only equals 24 mins.

a. to compare 2 fractions, we must get the LCD (least common denominator) if the denominator is not the same but if the denominators are the same, we just need to look the difference of the two denominators. we are comparing fractions in with additions, so we are going to use methods such as decimal, percentage, clock, least common denominator, and using pictures.

clock method:

1/2+1/6

1/2 is 30 minutes of an hour
1/2, 1 is one hour
that is 60 minutes divided by
2 which is also the same as 60/2
and 60 divided by 2 is 30 so i got
30 minutes (the half of an hour)







1/6 is about 10 minutes of an hour. 60 divided 6 is equal to 10 minutes and 1/6 is also equal to 10/60. 10 minutes, the numerator, 60 minutes, the denominator













1/4+7/12



1/4 means a quarter of something so 1/4 of 60 minutes is 15 minutes (1/4*60) or 60 divided by 4 is 15











7/12 is about 35 minutes of an hour. we can count the lines in the circumference of the of the circle, its 12, so we can get the amount of the fraction easily and we just need to count seven lines and then we stop because the denominator is 12

7/28 can be reduced to 1/4 same as 6/24, so the equation will be easier to understand. it is 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2 or 30 minutes. 1/3 in a different equation is also 20 minutes of an hour + 5/6 = 50 minutes out of 60. so now we have all the information so 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2 __ 1/3+5/6 = 7/6. 1/2 is 30minutes plus 7/6 is 1 hr. and 10 mins so 5/6 + 1/3 is totally bigger

(1/2 = 30 minutes, 1/6 = 10 minutes) 1/2 and 1/6 equals 40 minutes. The fraction would be 40/60, if you reduce it, it would be 2/3. 2/3 equals 66 percent.

(1/4 = 15 minutes, 7/12 = 35 minutes)1/4 and 7/12 equals 50 minutes. The fraction would be 50/60, if you reduce it, it would be 5/6.5/6 equals 83 percent.

I couldn't find my bike race so I used this one .
I calculated the Km positions of twelfth, sixth, and third by using a clock. I thought " how much does 12, 6, and 3 go into 60." 12 goes into 60, 5 times. 6 goes into 60, 10 times. 3 goes into 60, 20 times. 5, 10 and 20 are equivalent to eachother. So in the bikerace map some of the KM positions were in the same box.

To get a quarter of 16 you have to cut it in half and in half again.16-8-4. Four will be the answer. Another way is 16 divided by four.
To get 3/4 of 16, 8 + 4. 8 is 1/2 of 16, and 4 is 1/4 of 16. The answer is 12.
Another way is, since a quarter of 16 is 4 and you want to get 3/4. Just multiply 4 by 3.

Make A Match- The theme is like a wizard game. There is bottles on shelves. Some of the bottles have number fractions, some have picture fractions.You have to click on one bottle, it will go down on a table, then you have to click the matching picture. If it's right the bottles will disappear.This site is very good. It deals with number fractions and picture fractions. The beginning will be pretty easy. As you move along to the next levels, there will be more bottles and harder fractions. The more challenging, the more you learn.

DIVISION

to find 1/4 of 22 you have to divide 22 by 4, which equals 5.5 . So 1/4 of 22= 5.5 , To find 3/4 of 22 you have to divide 22 by 4 again but this time multiply it by 3 and it equals 16.5

CUTTING IN HALF

to find 1/4 of 22 you cut it in half 2 times. So half of 22 is 11 and half of 11 is 5.5 , To find 3/4 of 22 you have to cut it in half 2 times again then just multiply by 3

On this website there are two games . They are both about comparing fractions. The first game is a dolphin race. You have to chose the largest fraction to win. The second game is ordering fractions . You have to put the fractions in order from largest to smallest. I think this game is helpful because it teaches you which fractions are bigger.

Karen and Hanah's Bikerace

2 things about our bikerace was that it was a bit hard and confusing. Also, it helped me learn a little bit more about fractions.

Well, Karen and I used the clock method. We divided 60 by 6, 12 and 3. We put kilometer markings at every 12th, 6th and 3rd of the 60 kilometers. So, 60/12 = 5, 60/6 =10 and 60/3 = 20, some of the kilometer markings were in the same box. For example, the second 6th kilometer will also be the first 12th.
One way to find 3/4 of 16 is to divide 16 by 4. So 16/4 =4. So, since we are looking for 3/4 of 16, you just have to multiply 4 by 3. So, 4 times 3 =12. So, 3/4 of 16 is 12.
Another way to find 3/4 of 16 is to divide it by 2, then divide it by 2 again. So, 16/2=8. Then, 8/2 =4. Now, you have 4 so, multiply it by 3 because you want 3/4 of 16. So, 3 times 4 equals 12.

How to play the game.

Click on the game. You can play 1 player or 2 players. This game is sort of like memory, but with fractions. You'll see 16 yellow squares. You have to click on the yellow squares and fractions will appear on the cards. The cards you click on will either be equal or not. You have to get equal fractions, the ones that are the same value. If they aren't the same, you keep playing the game until all the cards are gone.

The bike course was confusing. There are lots of erasures on our work. But I hope that our answers are correct because my partner and I did our best. As you can see, there was a pattern on that bike course.

Pattern

60/12= 5 It means that there are 5 km markers in 60kms. in every 12th of the way

6o/6=10 It means that there are 10 km markers in 60 kms. in every 6th of the way

60/3=20 It means that there are 20 km markers in 60 kms. in every 3rd of the way.

How to find a quarter and 3/4 of a number? Use one of the following 16, 22, or 110.

To find a quarter of a number, divide the given number by 4. For example 16/4=4. So the quarter of 16 is 4. If you want to get 3/4 of 16, you just have to do the same thing but after getting the quotient, multiply it to 3. For example, 16/4=4. That's a quarter. 4x3=12, that's the 3/4 of 16.

Fraction Question

3/4 + 1/3 is not equal 4/7. Explain it.

There are a lot of ways to add fractions. The easiest way for me is getting the LCD (Least Common Denominator) to get the same denominator and then add it. Because in fraction, we have to make it's denominator similar. I use listing method to get the LCD of the fractions.

Denominators

4=4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 ..

3=3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 ..

The common multiples are 12 and 24 (just to name few because there are a lot of common multiples in this number). But since we need the LCD, we have to use 12.
