Mariya's BOB

On this post, the BOB is about the Surface Area and the Volume of a Rectangular Prism. The rectangular prism has 3 sides to it - the length, the height and the width. There are two ways to draw a rectangular prism - the net and 3 dimensional way.

To get the surface area, you have to get the area of each side.

Area of top and bottom : 2(length x width)

Area of front and back : 2(height x length)

Area of both sides : 2(height x width)

Surface Area = 2(LxW) + 2(HxL) + 2(HxW)

Here is an example:

Mariya's 2nd Scribe

Today, Mr. Harbeck gave us an assignment to make nets on 1 cm grid paper. We had 6 shapes to do. What we did was that we took a couple of units and measured the sides of the 3 dimensional shapes. We measured the height, length and width. After measuring the sides, we drew a net. The net had to make a square with 6 sides. After making the net, we did the area of the sides.

My assignment for this scribe was to show you three of the six shapes that we did in class.

Mariya's Scribe

today, we learned about adding fractions.
mr harbeck showed us how to add fractions with an example. our example was 4/5 + 8/15. we knew that 4/5 + 8/15 didnt equal to 12/20. so, what we did was find a common denominator. so, 4/5 became 12/15. what we did to get 12/15 was that we multiplied 4/5 by 3. now, we can add the two fractions. so, 12/15 + 8/15 added up to 20/15. 20/15 is an unpropper fraction so we changed it to 1 5/15 or simplified it to 1 1/3.

today, we also did another investigation. in today's investigation, we are doing a problem in two places in Brooklyn, Carrol Garden and Flatbush. what we know about the two places is that the community wants to build a park for their neighbourhood and both of their space for the park is 50 m by 100 m.
In Carrol Garden's, 3/4 of the lot is devoted to a playground and 2/5 of the playground is blacktop.
In Flatbush, 2/5 of the lot is devoted to a playground and 3/4 of the playground is blacktop.

these are our questions.
- is one neighbourhood getting more blacktop than the other?
- is there more blacktop space in one lot than in the other lot ?
- how would you convince the people in the two neighbourhoods that your conclusion is correct ?

Mariya's 2nd Growing Post

^^ this is a picture of our test. ( Betty's Snack Mix)

1. what strategies were needed?
- ratio table
- money method
- clock method

2. How did you use these strategies?
- i didn't really use any of these strategies. what i used was that i muliplied 2 and 5 which equals to 10. next i added 2/5 5 times which gave me 10/5. i then divided 10 and 5 which gave me 2. last, i added up 10 and 2 which gave me the 12 cups.

3. Or How could you of used these strategies.
- how i could've used those strategies was to use a ratio table. i think using a ratio table is easy. all you have to do is make a t-chart, make titles, then do your math. what you also do in a ratio table is that you have to multiply or divide a number to get the answer. like this...

4. How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix? Use a ratio table

5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.
