Which is larger....1/2 + 1/6 or 1/4 + 7/12.

• I used the clock method because it's easy to work with and easy to understand.

• Explanations:

*1/2 + 1/6
*1/2 = 30 minutes.
*1/6 = 10 minutes.
*30 + 10 = 40 minutes.



*1/4 + 7/12
*1/4 = 15 minutes.
*7/12 = 35 minutes.
*15 + 35 = 50 minutes.


Karen and Hanah's Bikerace

2 things about our bikerace was that it was a bit hard and confusing. Also, it helped me learn a little bit more about fractions.

Well, Karen and I used the clock method. We divided 60 by 6, 12 and 3. We put kilometer markings at every 12th, 6th and 3rd of the 60 kilometers. So, 60/12 = 5, 60/6 =10 and 60/3 = 20, some of the kilometer markings were in the same box. For example, the second 6th kilometer will also be the first 12th.
One way to find 3/4 of 16 is to divide 16 by 4. So 16/4 =4. So, since we are looking for 3/4 of 16, you just have to multiply 4 by 3. So, 4 times 3 =12. So, 3/4 of 16 is 12.
Another way to find 3/4 of 16 is to divide it by 2, then divide it by 2 again. So, 16/2=8. Then, 8/2 =4. Now, you have 4 so, multiply it by 3 because you want 3/4 of 16. So, 3 times 4 equals 12.

You have to click on the yellow squares and fractions will appear on the cards. The cards you click on will either be equal or not. You have to get equal fractions, the ones that are the same value. I searched for a game that will show fraction. The objective of the game is to find out how many slices of pizza are left. The good thing about this site is you can test your skill in fraction. Click the link below to play the game

I used the clock method to figure out which set of fraction is bigger than the other.

















As you can see, 1/2 + 1/6 is bigger than 1/4+7/12.

The bike course was confusing. There are lots of erasures on our work. But I hope that our answers are correct because my partner and I did our best. As you can see, there was a pattern on that bike course.

Pattern

60/12= 5 It means that there are 5 km markers in 60kms. in every 12th of the way

6o/6=10 It means that there are 10 km markers in 60 kms. in every 6th of the way

60/3=20 It means that there are 20 km markers in 60 kms. in every 3rd of the way.

How to find a quarter and 3/4 of a number? Use one of the following 16, 22, or 110.

To find a quarter of a number, divide the given number by 4. For example 16/4=4. So the quarter of 16 is 4. If you want to get 3/4 of 16, you just have to do the same thing but after getting the quotient, multiply it to 3. For example, 16/4=4. That's a quarter. 4x3=12, that's the 3/4 of 16.

Fraction Question

3/4 + 1/3 is not equal 4/7. Explain it.

There are a lot of ways to add fractions. The easiest way for me is getting the LCD (Least Common Denominator) to get the same denominator and then add it. Because in fraction, we have to make it's denominator similar. I use listing method to get the LCD of the fractions.

Denominators

4=4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 ..

3=3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 ..

The common multiples are 12 and 24 (just to name few because there are a lot of common multiples in this number). But since we need the LCD, we have to use 12.

• 1/4 = 15 mins

• 15 + 8 = 23 mins.
• 23 mins. / 60 mins.

• 1/2 = 30 mins.

• 20 + 30 = 50 mins.

• 1/2 of a clock is 30 ( 60÷2=30x1=30)
• 1/6 of a clock is 10 ( 60÷6=10x1=10)
• 30+10 = 40 minutes

1/4 + 7/12=?

• 1/4 of a clock is 15 (60÷4=15x1=15)
• 7/12 of a clock is 35(60÷12=5x7=35)
• 15+35=50 minutes

In our bike race, we used the clock method to find the answer for each stations.
For example:
The resting point is every eight of the way
60 minutes and we used every minute of the clock to find how many times it would be resting point in 60 km.

• one way is 16x3 equals 48 ÷ 4 = 12
• the other way is to divide it by two so it would be like 16÷ 2 = 8 then 8÷ 2=4 after doing that you have to multiply 4 to 3 then it would be equals to 12 .

To find the answer I used the clock method, first I have to find the answer for the 4/6 + 1/3. For 4/6 you have to divide 60 ÷ 6 = 10 x 4 equals 40 then 1/3 you do the same thing except different numbers 60 ÷ 3= 20x2=40 so it would be 40 + 40 = 80 or 1 hour and 20/60 minutes. Then for 1/6 + 3/5 = ?, 1/6 - 60 ÷ 6 then x 1 = 10 while for 3/5 - 60 ÷ 5 equals 12 then x 3 = 36. Now the answer for 10 (1/6) + 36(3/5) = 46 minutes

I divide 60 to 12 which is 5, i divide 60 to 6 which is 10,
i divide 60 to 3 which is 18. the pattern i see is the 12, 6, 3 is divided by 2
the answer is going up by 5. the bike race is challenging because its long and its hard to turn.

i'm using anne's and jenna's bikeathon picture.

i know anne and jenna got their answer wrong but i get how they got it. instead of dividing 60 by 8 , they just put the fraction as 1/8. and for the rest, i think they just divided everything else by 60...

for this game, its like memory. what you have to do is that you have to match the equivalent fractions. for every level, it gets harder and harder. also, you are getting timed each round.

i dont think this is right. i think that wendell ate more than jacqueline did. i think wendell did because, if 1/2 = 50% and 1/4= 25%. if you compare the two fractions, 50% is larger than 25%.
