Angelo's Scribe of Test Number One

On part one of the math test, we were given eight algebraic equations. Half were written out in numeric form, the other half, as written in words. For the numeric equations, we had to write down the correct word form for that equation. For example, the numerical equation would be 7x + 5x, and then we'd have to write it as seven times a number increased by 5 times a number. Like this:

When we were dealing with the written form, the equation would be like, nine centimeters less than 3/4 of length x. Then we'd have to write it into a numeric equation, which would be 3/4x - 9. Like this:

These type of questions ended the first part.

For Part Two, we were to complete a graph. We were given a graph and the first 3 figures of a pattern. The first 3 figures of the pattern were these:

The graph looked like this :
You had to fill three sides of the graph with the appropriate title.
We also had to create a T - Table showing our understanding of the pattern. It kind of looked like this :

After we completed the chart, and had it all filled out, we had to come up with an algebraic equation on how you would get from x to y. This was the equation needed:

You need to have the x equal the figure number and the y equal the number of squares. In our test these were what we needed to get the questions correct:

This scribe is all about paints used in a part of a room.

here is the problem:

if you can paint 2/5 of paint can, in a quarter of a room, how many paint can/s will be used when you will paint a whole room?

to answer this problem, one strategy can be used in solving this problem. it is ratio table. the picture shows how this problem will be solved. but the answer is not yet shown, it only showed how to get the whole room (1/4 x 4). to make 1/4 into a whole number which is one, the numerator and the denominator must be the same so since it was 1/4, we multiply it into 4 to get 4/4 or 1....one thing in ratio table is that when you do it in one side, do it on the other side. so we multiply the number 4 too, to answer the question.






this is to show how you multiply the fraction to 4... and 2 2/3 is the answer to this problem that can paint the whole room

Today, we learned how to multiply mixed numbers. Here are the steps in multiplying mixed numbers.

Example:
1 1/4 x 1 1/2

First, you have to convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions.

Denominator x Whole number + Numerator

1 1/4 = 4 x 1 + 1 = 5/4
(4 multiplied by 1 equals 4 plus 1 equals 5. The denominator stays the same.)
1 1/2 = 2 x 1 + 1 = 3/2
(2 multiplied by 1 equals 2 plus 1 equals 3. The denominator stays the same.)

Now, we have 5/4 x 3/2.

Second, you have to multiply the numerators.












5 x 3 = 15

Third, you have to multiply the denominators.












4 x 2 = 8

Now, we have 15/8.

Fourth, we have to simplify the answer. To convert an improper number to mixed number, we have to divide them.












The answer will be the whole number, the remainder will be the numerator, and the divisor will be the denominator. So, we now have 1 7/8.

1 1/4 x 1 1/2 = 1 7/8



We can also use the numerator swap...

Example:
2 1/5 x 1 2/3

We will do the first step...convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions.

2 1/5 = 5 x 2 + 1 =11/5
1 2/3 = 3 x 1 + 2 = 5/3

Now, we have 11/5 x 5/3.

To multiply the fractions easier, we will do the numerator swap.

11/5 x 5/3 will become 5/5 x 11/3.

Now, we have to simplify these fractions.

5/5 = 1
11/3 = 11/3

Our fractions now are 1 x 11/3.

To multiply a whole number and a fraction, you just need to put 1 as the denominator of the whole number.












Now, we have to multiply the numerators..













1 x 11 =
11

And the denominators..












1 x 3 = 3

**Or you can just multiply them like 1 x 1/3 and the answer is 1/3 because any number you multiply by 1, the answer is always the number.

We now have 11/3. We need to simplify them.













So, 2 1/5 x 1 2/3 = 3 2/3

Pennsylvania Turnpike Investigation
Sorry but I can't see the picture. :(
I'm going to talk about the "Pennsylvania Turnpike Investigation". I am going to explain how we get the answers.

1. How many gallons of gas and what fraction of a full tank of gas did Maria use on the turnpike driving from her house to Lance's house?
- first we subtract 352 and 242 the answer is 110. 110 is the mile from Maria's to Lance's.
-110 is the same as 3 and 1/3.
-1/3 out of 15 is how much gallons she used on the turnpike to Lance's house.

2. What fraction of a full tank of gas did she use on the turnpike driving to the combined distance from her house to Lance's house to Alicia's house?
- we subtract 287 by 55 and we got 187 then we add 110 and 187 and we got 297 miles.
- then Jenna and I decided to divide it by 33 and the answer is 9.
- it's obvouisly that she used 9 out of 15 gallons to get the distances.

3.How much time will she spend driving on the turnpike when she drives back home to Philadelphia?
- we add 1 hour ( 60 mins.) to 40 minutes the answer is 100.
- then, we divide 242 and 100 and we got 2.42
- we add 242 by 55 the answer is 297 and we divide it by 2.42 and we got 2 hours 2 minnutes and 2 seconds.

This is the picture of my(and my partner's) "Pennsylvania Turnpike Investigation." I'm going to explain what we did to get the answers. I think the number lines are wrong so I'm just going to make new ones to make it more easier to understand.





1) How many gallons of gas and what fraction of a full tank of gas did Maria use on the turnpike driving from her house to Lance's house?


- First, we found out that Maria's to Lance's house was 110 miles.
-
110 miles is also 3 and 1/3. 3 and 1/3 is how much gallons of gas, out of 15, she used to get to Lance's house.




2) What fraction of a full tank of gas did she use on the turnpike driving to the combined distance from her house to Lance's house to Alicia's house?


- We already knew the distance from Maria's to Lance's so we had to figure out the distance to Lance's to Alicia's.
- To get that, we subtracted 242 by 55 and we got 187.
-
So we added them together to get 297 miles.
- Then, we did 297 divided by 33 (which is the miles by the miles per gallon) and we got 9.
- She used 9 gallons out of 15 gallons to get to the combined distances.




3)How much time will she spend driving on the turnpike when she drives back home to Philadelphia?


- First, we turned 110 miles into time which was 1 hour and 50 mins.
- Then, we subtracted 10 minutes to get 1 hour and 40 mins because we couldn't find another way to get 1 hour and 40 mins.
- We did the same thing to 187 miles and we got 3 hours and 7 mins then we subtracted 10 mins and we got 2 hours and 57 mins.
- We added it together and we got 4 hours and 37 minutes
