Karen's Bob

On this BOB, I will be talking about the surface area and a volume of a rectangular prism and a cube. I will also show pictures so that it could make it easier to understand.

The surface area of a rectangular prism is covered with six rectangles.Although we don't have to figure out all six of them since top and bottom are the same, right and left are the same, and also front and back of it is the same. Height, lenght, width are the lenghts of the 3 sides.



The surface area of a cube is the area of six squares that covers the whole thing. The formula of the surface area of a rectangular prism and a cube is the same.

Area of Top and Bottom = 2(L x W) Area of Front and Back = 2(H x L) Area of Both Sides = 2(H x W) The whole formula of the surface area of the rectangle is 2(lxw)+2(hxl)+2(hxw)

An example of surface area;


The volume of a rectangular prism and a cube can be found by the formula:
volume=length x width x height or bxh

Surface Area: To get the surface area of a 3D shape, like a rectangular prism, you first need to make the prism into a net. Then you find the area of the fronts,backs,sides,bottom, and the top. Then you just add them all together to get your surface area.














Volume:



For volume you just use the formula "LxWxH" or length x width x height.



soo 4 x 4 x 4 = 64cm3 , this means volume = 64 cubic centimeters " 64cm3".

On this BOB we have to post what we know all about surface area (sa) and volume (v) of a Cube and a Rectangular Prism..

For the Rectangular Prism:
A Rectangular Prism has 3 dimensions to it. Length, Width and Height. There are 2 different ways of drawing the Rectangular Prism. The first way is a net, which is flat, and the second way is a 3D way. To get the surface area of the Rectangular Prism you have to count the total units inside the net. But since that can be a handful, you can just use the formula to be easier. The formula is "2(Lxw) x 2(HxL) x 2(HxW) = SA" To get the volume, you have to multiply all 3 dimensions together like this, "Length x Width x Height." That is the formula for volume.

For Cube:
A cube also has 3 dimensions to it and can also be drawn the same way as those 2 examples for Rectangular Prism. The formula that was used from the Rectangular Prism to get the surface area can also be used for the cube. But theres an easier way, since a cube has 6 EQUAL sides, you can just multiply it by 6.

This BOB is about the surface area and volume of a cube and a rectangular prism.

The Formula : 2(LxW)+2(HxL)+2(HxW)

Rectangular prism has three sides, (lenght, width, and height). The net and the 3 dimension are the 2 ways to represent a rectangular prism.

A cube has 3 dimensions to it. It can also be drawn the same way as net and 3dimensional. The formula that was used from the Rectangular Prism to get the surface area can also be used for the cube.

To get the surface area, you have to get the area of each side.
Area of top and bottom :
2(length x width)
Area of front and back : 2(height x length)
Area of both sides :
2(height x width)
Surface Area =
2(LxW) + 2(HxL) + 2(HxW)







Here is an example:



L = 8 cm
W = 6 cm
H = 16 cm
Surface Area = 2(LxW) + 2(HxL) + 2(HxW)
Surface Area = 336 cm²

The BOB is about the surface area (SA) and the area.



There are two ways you can illustrate a 3 dimentional cube. One is the cube, and the other is the net.



There are three parts to a cube or rectangular prism, the width, height and length.






































To get the surface area of the whole prism, you have to get the area of each square used on the prism.





Area of Top and Bottom = 2(L x W)


Area of Front and Back = 2(H x L)


Area of Both Sides = 2(H x W)





So the whole equation should look like this


2(L x W) + 2(H x L) + 2(H x W)





E.g.














L=4cm
W=3cm
H=5cm

SA = 2(L x W) + 2(H x L) + 2(H x W)
SA = 2(4 x 3) + 2(5 x 4) + 2(5 x 3)
SA = (2 x 12cm²) + (2 x 20cm²) + (2 x 15cm²)
SA = 24cm² + 40cm² + 30cm²
SA = 94cm²

Volume has a simple formula.
Volume = (L x W)H
Volume = (4 x 3)5
Volume = 12cm² x 5cm²
Volume = 60cm[cubed]

Surface Area- is the sum of all the areas of all the shapes that cover the surface of an object.

*when writng the final answer for surface area the measuring unit is in squared

-since a cube has 6 equal sides its easier to solve for its surafce area

Volume- is the number of cubes needed to fill in the shape.
SOLVING FOR THE VOLUME OF A CUBE:

FORMULA: V=l x w x h
or V= area of the base x h

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
The hardest thing for me was the subs , dividing into equal peices, so each kid get a equal peice.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
I didn't understand how to do the time with the clock . But, when my friends told me i was okay with it .

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
Hmm, I would probably teach them fractions, so that if they are cooking , they could serve me and my sister including them equally .

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
The hardest thing for me was sort of krypto because in krpyto you would have to get a few numbers to find an answer and in the equation there would be a blank in between one of the numbers. The subs were also hard for me, because it was hard to explain how you divided it, etc.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
I understand how to use mathematical words now. Like "Unit Fractions" i didn't know what that meant before but now i do. It means any fraction with a numerator of 1.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
I would teach my parents how to make improper fractions into mixed fractions. Or make fractions so that it can be a percentage out of 100. I would show my parents to do it in pictures so that they can understand clearly.

(uhh.. sorry if some of my grammar or use of words don't make sense)

What was the hardest thing about this unit?

The hardest thing about this unit is the krypto. Some of the questions we had to solve were very hard. But I found some of them really easy, but it was a lot of fun.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?

What I mostly understand now is the whole sub tables, at first I was like "What is he talking about?" But after a few more explanations I got it straight of the bat. Now I will know how to use it for more stuff in the future.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?

I would teach my mother about mixed fractions. I would give her a whole bunch of mixed fractions then I would give her a bunch of whole numbers and I would ask her to show me which goes with which then I would tell her what she did wrong and how to fix it.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
the hardest thing in this unit was the krypto because sometimes the numbers are not friendly. And also the subs because it's confusing me sometimes..
What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
i understand now how to use the clock for solving a fraction...
and to solve a fraction with different denominators..
If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
i will teach them how to use the clock for fractions and how to teach them i will draw a clock and they will try to solve it...and how to solve a fraction with different denominators..

what was the hardest thing about this unit?
the hardest thing about this unit, was doing all the sub assignments. there were a lot of calculations to keep up with, and i found it difficult to do that.

What do i now understand, what i didn't understand before?
i now understand how to use clocks to solve fractions. it really comes in handy and it makes fractions easy to understand

what would you teach your parents, and how would you teach them?
i would teach them how to use clocks to solve fractions. if it helped me a lot, it should help them a lot too! i would give them a simple question like, 1/2 + 1/2. they SHOULD know what half an hour would be, so i'd tell then 2 30 minutes would equal 1 hour. so the fraction would be 1/1.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
For me, I think the hardest thing in this unit was the subs because its hard to divide it equally so that each kid can get the same amount and size, also the KRYTO because, sometimes, the numbers arent friendly.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
Now, I think I understand more about fractions then before.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
If I had to teach my parents something about fractions I think I would teach them how to add fractions by using the clock way, or using pictures such as (rectangles).

I think the hardest thing in this unit was the sub questions cause i didnt really understand the adding , dividing, and multipying the subs so each kid gets a equal piece.

Now i understand how to add fractions because before it was hard for me to add them but now that i use the clock method its easier for me.


If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?

If i had to teach my parents something about fractions i'd teach them how to add fractions. To teach them how to add fractions i'd show them the clock method we used in class becuase it made adding fractions easier for me. After that i'd ask them a couple of questions about adding fractions to see if the understood me.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
- I think the hardest thing about the unit was the subs. I got so confused when i had to multiply and divide the fractions, and you were working with a partner so if your partner got a different answer you knew someone did something wrong.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
- Now I understand how to add fractions, I didn't remember you had to change the numerator and the denominator before adding them. I thought you just added them how they were.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
-If I had to teach my parents something about fractions i would teach them the clock method, because its teaching you how to add fractions AND its teaching them how to tell which fraction is bigger or smaller. Plus its really easy.

The hardest thing about this unit was adding the fractions without knowing that we could use the clock to answer them.

Now i know how to add fractions because before i thought you just had to change the denominator to the highest one shown then add the two numerators together.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
If i had to teach my parents about fractions I would teach them how to add fractions, and to do it I'd just show them how to add them with the clocks.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
The hardest thing in this unit was when we were working on the subs. I thought that was hard because I didn't know how to solve the problem and I didn't know if me and my partner did it right.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
Before, I didn't understand how to add fractions. I didn't know how to do it right until Mr. Harbeck showed us the clock method. I think the clock method is really easy to use when you're stuck with adding frations.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
I would teach my parents how to tell if the fration is larger than the other fraction. I would show them how to use the clock. For example, I would show them which is larger - 1/2 + 2/3 ? 1/4 + 2/6
half of 60 is 30 and a third of 60 is 20. multiply 20 by 2 to get 40. now add 30 and 40 together to get 70.
one fourth of 60 is 15 and a sixth of 60 is 10. multiply 10 by 2 to get 20. now add 20 and 15 together to get 35.
now you can tell which is larger. 70 > 35 so, 1/2 + 2/3 > 1/4 + 2/6

I think the hardest thing about this unit was the sub questions. It was a little confusing when we had to add, divide and multiply the fractions.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
I understand now how to use the clock method and how to add the fractions using it.

If i had to teach my parents something about fractions i would show them how to add fractions by using the clock method.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
I think the hardest thing was trying to solve the sub questions . I thought it was hard to figure out what fraction of a sub each person got and it was even harder explaining how you got your answer.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
What i understand now is how to add fractions . Before i never knew how, i thought you had to multiply it or something, but the way we use a clock is much more easier for me to understand.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
If i had to teach my parents about fractions i would probably teach them about adding fractions, because i understand it now and i think i would be able to explain it to them enough that they will get it. I would use the clock way to explain it because i think it would be easier.

What was the hardest thing about this unit?
I think the hardest thing about this unit is KRYPTO because you must really "play" with the numbers carefully and your mind is really important for the analization. I think should have worked really hard for it. Another lesson was the sub questions.
What do you understand now that you didn't understand before?
I now understand multiplying numbers by breaking them down. Before, we multiply numbers by solving the numbers one by one. First, it was so confusing, but I understand them now and it is a lot better than multiplying them one by one.
If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
If I had to teach my parents something about fractions, it would be adding the fractions by using the clock. It's so much better and a lot easier. Since they know how to look the time, they will understand it.

What's the hardest thing about this unit?
For me, as a student, the hardest thing about this unti is the KRYPTO. Some of it are easy but some are really hard. It's the first time that I learned about KRYPTO and it's hard for me to find solutions for numbers. Maybe if i work hard for it, i won't have a hard time to figure it out.

What do you understand now that you did not understand before?
I understand how to add fractions with different denominators.

If you had to teach your parents something about fractions what would it be and how would you do it?
If i have to teach my parents something about fraction, it would be adding fractions with different denominator so that they won't be confused with it. Because everytime I add factions with different denominators, I always got confused. But now, I got used to it.
